Lanier Isom: Fundamentalist law in the Heart of Dixie

Today in Alabama, fundamentalists have enacted the Christian version of Sharia law in the Heart of Dixie. Alabama politicians want women to trade in their tube tops for a hijab. The passage of the Draconian abortion ban, the Alabama Life Human Protection Act, has codified the war against women into law. The fact this legislation doesn’t apply to an egg in a laboratory because it’s “outside a woman’s body,” according to Rep. Clyde Chambliss, gave away the game. He and his Republican allies were never pro-life. They wouldn’t be in favor of capital punishment, imprisoning children in cages on the border, arming teachers and under-funding education and healthcare if they were. They protest government meddling in their pocketbook, clean air or clean water, but believe owning a woman’s body is their right.

Playing the part of an angry God, they pretend they’re protecting fetuses. They are controlling women. In their evangelical view, they are relegating them to their God-given place where the choices are simple; good wives or Jezebels, one to serve men, the other to be punished. This last grasp for power and authority is especially violent and vindictive. Callous cowards without a shred of compassion, these men feel emasculated and fearful of women and people of color taking away their right to privilege and economic domination.
